If the Mahindra Thar is India's default first overland vehicle, the Toyota Fortuner is the one people graduate to when the priority becomes distance, comfort and the confidence to put the whole family on a 14-day Himalayan loop. It is a body-on-frame SUV with a genuine low-range transfer case, a 2.8-litre turbodiesel with the torque to climb a loaded Taglang La or Baralacha La without drama, and a Toyota reliability record that means very little goes wrong a long way from a workshop. On the Leh and Spiti circuits that reputation is worth as much as any spec sheet.
What separates the Fortuner from the smaller rigs on this site is simple: size and stability. It is long-wheelbase, wide-tracked and heavy - kerb weight is around 2,200 kg - so it sits planted on rough surface where a short-wheelbase Thar feels twitchy, and it shrugs off crosswinds on the open Morey Plains that would have a lighter vehicle working. That stability is exactly why the Fortuner can carry the largest gear in our range. Where we steer a Thar owner away from the big tents, the Fortuner is the vehicle they were designed for.
The flip side of all that mass is that the Fortuner is thirsty and big in tight places - a Spiti village lane or a narrow river crossing asks more of the driver than a Jimny does. But for the job most owners actually buy it for, which is covering long distances in comfort and arriving rested, it is the most complete overland platform sold in India. Build it to make the most of the space it gives you, and it will carry four people and a fortnight of kit anywhere the road goes.
As on any overland build there are two roof numbers that matter, and confusing them is the most common mistake. The dynamic load is what the roof can carry while you are driving - for the Fortuner's factory roof rails that sits in the region of 80 kg, and it is the ceiling for your crossbars plus the closed tent plus anything strapped on top while moving. The static load is what the tent and roof hold while parked, and it is far higher: a tent's 400 kg base rating refers to people sleeping in it once you have stopped, not to a load you can drive around with.
Here the Fortuner's advantage becomes concrete. Our flagship CampTop 400Max is a 7 ft x 7 ft hardshell built on an aerospace-grade aluminium frame with a carbon-fibre floor, rated to a 400 kg static load, and it is the only tent in our class with a polycarbonate shell rather than conventional ABS - tougher and more impact-resistant for highway grit and hail. At roughly 81 kg with its ladder it is a serious tent, and a Thar simply should not carry it; the Fortuner, with its wider track and higher dynamic allowance, takes it in its stride. For a family that already seats five in the Fortuner, the 400Max turns the roof into a genuine second bedroom.
Not every Fortuner owner needs the largest tent, and two alternatives suit the platform just as well. The Bison61, our premium side-opening hardshell with German Stabilus struts and a felt-lined insulated shell, lists the Fortuner directly in its fitment and opens in seconds for highway-heavy touring. For cold-focused trips the CampTop 300Lux softshell - dual heater ports, a 60mm thermal-control mattress and a 3000mm+ waterproof rating on a 300 kg honeycomb base - is the warm choice at 53 kg. Match the tent to how you travel: 400Max for space, Bison61 for fast hardshell convenience, 300Lux for sub-zero warmth. The Toyota Fortuner runs a 265-section tyre across its range - 265/65 R17 on the older and standard 2.8 diesel, 265/60 R18 on the Legender and current top trims. That big-SUV footprint maps directly to two TractionX chains, and both list the Fortuner by name in our fitment ladder. The automatic TractionX AX200 is the one most Fortuner owners should buy: it has a self-tensioning system that locks the chain in place as you drive, so there is no stopping to retighten on a -10C gradient, and at 5.8 kg the set is easy to carry and fit. If you would rather hand-fit and save, the manual TractionX MX160 covers the same Fortuner / Hilux / Endeavour / MU-X / Gloster envelope for less. Both share the same certified hardware: TUV GS and ONORM V5117 ratings, carburised multi-alloy steel at HV 720-780 (Boron, Titanium, Manganese, Chromium and Carbon, 8-hour heat treatment at 900C), a square-link profile that gives around 40% more surface grip than round chains, and a hardened-case, flexible-core build that resists brittle snapping at the -25C the Fortuner genuinely sees on a winter Himalayan run. Both are ABS- and traction-control-compatible. If you run a Legender or a lifted Fortuner on oversized all-terrain rubber, step up to the automatic AX220 or the manual MX180 - both list the larger Land Cruiser / Prado envelope - and always confirm your exact tyre size before ordering, because a chained oversized tyre can foul the arch liner at full lock.

Snow chains are the one item Fortuner owners most often skip and most often regret, precisely because the vehicle's all-weather composure can lull you into thinking it does not need them. It does. A loaded Fortuner on summer highway tyres has no meaningful grip on glare ice, and four-wheel drive does nothing to help you stop or steer once the tread has packed with snow - it only helps you accelerate into trouble. On any Himalayan run from October to April, a certified set of chains in the boot is the difference between continuing over a snowed-in Kunzum or Chang La and being turned back or towed.
The correct size is covered in the fitment box below, but the short version is two chains, both listed for the Fortuner by name. The automatic TractionX AX200 self-tensions as you drive and is what we fit for most owners; the manual TractionX MX160 covers the same envelope for less if you are happy to hand-fit. Carry them for the driven axle, and critically, practise fitting them once in your driveway before the trip - nobody learns a new chain in the dark on a 15% ice gradient with numb fingers. Fit them before the climb gets bad, not in the middle of it.
One Fortuner-specific note on tyres: if you have moved to oversized all-terrain rubber, the standard AX200 or MX160 may not clear, and you should step up to the AX220 or MX180, which list the larger Land Cruiser and Prado envelope. An awning is the comfort upgrade that turns a Fortuner from a vehicle you sleep on into a basecamp you live in. The 270 SaberLight V2 is freestanding - a strong aluminium arm structure that stands without legs in normal conditions - and wraps a 2-metre radius around the side and rear of the vehicle, giving you a covered kitchen and living area in under a minute, single-handed. On a long Ladakh loop where you cook and shelter at the same camp for several nights, or in a Kutch wind, or under a Northeast downpour, it is the difference between enduring a camp and enjoying it. Add the optional wall set and it closes into a wind- and rain-proof shelter.
For recovery, build from the ground up rather than buying a winch first. A 2.2-tonne Fortuner is heavy, so the floor matters: a pair of traction boards rated to 22,000 lb and a 1-inch kinetic recovery rope rated to 48,000 lb solve the overwhelming majority of real situations a Fortuner finds - bogged in Rann salt, sunk to the sills in a Spiti snowdrift, or losing grip on a wet Northeast climb. The boards need no anchor point and double as a shovel; both are rated to the -25C the Fortuner sees in winter. Buy a winch later if your routes truly demand it, but most owners never will.
Finally, heat. Above 3,500 m a tent without heating is survivable but miserable, and the Fortuner's long-range mission means you will camp at altitude for nights on end. The ThermaEvo AH5 is a diesel air heater with altitude compensation to 5,000 m and a fully enclosed combustion system for safe overnight running, and it ducts straight into the heater ports on the CampTop 300Lux or the 400Max's heater port. Pair tent, chains, awning, recovery and heater, drop a 26-litre HydroX26 water tank low in the load bay rather than on the roof, and you have a Fortuner ready for the routes that matter. The manual MX160 covers the same Fortuner / Hilux / Endeavour / MU-X / Gloster envelope and uses the same certified multi-alloy steel, but you tension it by hand and it costs less. If your budget allows, choose the AX200; if you are comfortable hand-fitting, the MX160 is excellent value.
